<html xmlns:tei="http://www.tei-c.org/ns/1.0"><body><h1 align="center" class="head">Dirae Faces.</h1><div class="stanza"><p class="line"><span class="smallcaps">The</span> Flemish Carillon towers are cracked and scorched</p><p class="line" style="text-indent:5%">As Hell's red fury round them flames and hails;</p><p class="line">Into Ancona the drowned fisher lads</p><p class="line" style="text-indent:5%">From the Adriatic wrapped in sheets and sails</p><p class="line">They bring from their mined boats; the carnage grows</p><p class="line" style="text-indent:5%">Till the earth shudders and all Europe wails.</p><p class="line">Everywhere is the rustle of Death's wings.</p><p class="line" style="text-indent:5%">To the mad despot as he cowers and quails</p><p class="line">Appear the direful faces that portend</p><p class="line" style="text-indent:5%">The imminent doom of Kaisers and of Kings;</p><p class="line">And the Hohenzollern's fated shameful end</p><p class="line" style="text-indent:5%">As the divine and popular will prevails;</p><p class="line">And loaded with the curses of mankind</p><p class="line" style="text-indent:5%">They sink into the Bloody sea, and all help fails.</p></div><p class="byline">R.
