Note. --The Fourth and Fifth Preludes and "A Non-Combatant" first appeared in the Ploughshare, and "The Hill-top Wood" in the Poetry Review. "A Schoolmaster in Picardy" was suggested by Albert Thierry's Des Conditions de la Paix (Paris, L'Union pour la Verit , 1916), partly written in the trenches. Its author was killed at Aix Noulette, 26 May, 1915.
